This is an additional contribution to the European Commission’s Action Plan against communicable diseases linked to poverty (HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis), which also includes a European strategy to lower the price of drugs in developing countries.
The new line provides financing for information, education and communication activities, appropriate to the cultural and socioeconomic circumstances of the population. Likewise, it contemplates projects to improve health care for young people, and especially women, in developing countries, and to promote treatment, research and training in this field.
The activities will be channeled through non-profit organizations, both private and public, national or international. To this end, the European Commission will open a process for assigning projects in the coming days.
According to data released at the recent International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, 95% of the 40 million infected people worldwide live in developing countries.
